About "SISTERS OF THE WORLD"

MIA BARKAN CLARKE
"SISTERS OF THE WORLD"

Mia’s “Sisters of the World” series, in mixed media--oil sticks, acrylic, pen & ink, watercolor gouache--explores the relationship among the vast variety of ethnic, national, spiritual and religious, folkloric, mythical, and biblical women. The "Sisters of the World" concentration is a celebration of the sisterhood of all women--how far we've come, and how far we have yet to go. The artist's main inspiration for this concentration is to educate and to break down the barriers-to prevent ignorance among multi-cultural diversities. Through her ability as a multilingual speaker (Italian, French, Hebrew), Mia has been able to probe beneath the surface of a number of cultures through her never-ending travels to get inspiration for this concentration, which infuses her work with a depth, not ordinarily characteristic of the tourist artist. Mia's textile background is clearly evident in her painting. Her inspiration comes from motifs in ethnic designs, ancient interiors, peasant garments, and ornate architecture. The artist introduces the many sides of herself, as well as all women through the “Sisters of the World" series, demonstrating the deep complexity and conflict within every woman, hence honoring, embracing and celebrating the differences within the feminine spirit. The first woman ("Eve"), the quintessential fire-sign (Leo, Aries, Sagittarius) female ("Fire"), the gorgon ("Medusa"), the shadow ("Midnight"), the goddess of love ("Birth of Venus")-all exemplify the many different archetypes of the feminine divine. "Sisters of the World" invites the viewer to extend oneself into the psyche of women past, present and even future. Mia’s “Sisters of the World” paintings have been recently published in The Paterson Literary Review. Mia is also currently working on a book including her "Sisters of the World" paintings, along with related poems.
